How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 80 ÷ 100 = 0.8
- Multiply: 0.8 × 2 = 1.6
- Check: Work backwards: 1.6 ÷ 2 × 100 = 80%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 80/100 = part/2, so part = 80 × 2 ÷ 100 = 1.6. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =80%*2. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
1.6 is the 80% share of 2. The remaining 20% is 0.4, and the two parts add back up to 2.
Discounts: 80% off an item priced $2 saves $1.6, so you pay $0.4.
Adding and taking away 80%
Increasing 2 by 80% gives 3.6 and decreasing it by 80% gives 0.4. These do not cancel out: raising 2 by 80% and then lowering the result by 80% ends at 0.72, because the second 80% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 2% of 80. 80% of 2 and 2% of 80 are always equal (both are 80 × 2 ÷ 100 = 1.6), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
