How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 9 ÷ 100 = 0.09
  2. Multiply: 0.09 × 98 = 8.82
  3. Check: Work backwards: 8.82 ÷ 98 × 100 = 9%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 9/100 = part/98, so part = 9 × 98 ÷ 100 = 8.82. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =9%*98. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

8.82 is the 9% share of 98. The remaining 91% is 89.18, and the two parts add back up to 98.

Discounts: 9% off an item priced $98 saves $8.82, so you pay $89.18.

Adding and taking away 9%

Increasing 98 by 9% gives 106.82 and decreasing it by 9% gives 89.18. These do not cancel out: raising 98 by 9% and then lowering the result by 9% ends at 97.2062, because the second 9% is taken of a bigger number.
