How to work it out
- Difference: 100 − 10 = 90
- Divide by the starting value: 90 ÷ 10 = 9
- Multiply by 100: 900%
- Check: Work forwards from the start: 10 × (1 + 9) = 10 × 10 = 100.
In a spreadsheet: =(100-10)/10*100. Always divide by the starting value, not the new one. A rise from 40 to 50 is +25%, but the fall from 50 back to 40 is −20%.
What the result means
The new value is 10 times the old one: for every 100 at the start there are now 1,000. The value has more than doubled.
Prices: an item whose price rises from $10 to $100 has gone up by 900%.
Why the change back is different
A 900% rise followed by a 900% fall does not bring you back to 10: it gives -800. The second percentage is taken of 100, not of 10, so to undo this change you need 90% instead.

The other way round: Percentage change from 100 to 10. Percentage change is not symmetric: from 10 to 100 is 900%, but from 100 back to 10 is -90%, because the starting value is the base. For a comparison that is the same both ways, use the percentage difference between 10 and 100: 163.6364%. See Percentage difference between 10 and 100.
