How to work it out
- Difference: 90 − 10 = 80
- Divide by the starting value: 80 ÷ 10 = 8
- Multiply by 100: 800%
- Check: Work forwards from the start: 10 × (1 + 8) = 10 × 9 = 90.
In a spreadsheet: =(90-10)/10*100. Always divide by the starting value, not the new one. A rise from 40 to 50 is +25%, but the fall from 50 back to 40 is −20%.
What the result means
The new value is 9 times the old one: for every 100 at the start there are now 900. The value has more than doubled.
Prices: an item whose price rises from $10 to $90 has gone up by 800%.
Why the change back is different
A 800% rise followed by a 800% fall does not bring you back to 10: it gives -630. The second percentage is taken of 90, not of 10, so to undo this change you need 88.8889% instead.

The other way round: Percentage change from 90 to 10. Percentage change is not symmetric: from 10 to 90 is 800%, but from 90 back to 10 is -88.8889%, because the starting value is the base. For a comparison that is the same both ways, use the percentage difference between 10 and 90: 160%. See Percentage difference between 10 and 90.
