How to work it out
- Difference: 70 − 10 = 60
- Divide by the starting value: 60 ÷ 10 = 6
- Multiply by 100: 600%
- Check: Work forwards from the start: 10 × (1 + 6) = 10 × 7 = 70.
In a spreadsheet: =(70-10)/10*100. Always divide by the starting value, not the new one. A rise from 40 to 50 is +25%, but the fall from 50 back to 40 is −20%.
What the result means
The new value is 7 times the old one: for every 100 at the start there are now 700. The value has more than doubled.
Prices: an item whose price rises from $10 to $70 has gone up by 600%.
Why the change back is different
A 600% rise followed by a 600% fall does not bring you back to 10: it gives -350. The second percentage is taken of 70, not of 10, so to undo this change you need 85.7143% instead.

The other way round: Percentage change from 70 to 10. Percentage change is not symmetric: from 10 to 70 is 600%, but from 70 back to 10 is -85.7143%, because the starting value is the base. For a comparison that is the same both ways, use the percentage difference between 10 and 70: 150%. See Percentage difference between 10 and 70.
