How to work it out
- Difference: 80 − 10 = 70
- Divide by the starting value: 70 ÷ 10 = 7
- Multiply by 100: 700%
- Check: Work forwards from the start: 10 × (1 + 7) = 10 × 8 = 80.
In a spreadsheet: =(80-10)/10*100. Always divide by the starting value, not the new one. A rise from 40 to 50 is +25%, but the fall from 50 back to 40 is −20%.
What the result means
The new value is 8 times the old one: for every 100 at the start there are now 800. The value has more than doubled.
Prices: an item whose price rises from $10 to $80 has gone up by 700%.
Why the change back is different
A 700% rise followed by a 700% fall does not bring you back to 10: it gives -480. The second percentage is taken of 80, not of 10, so to undo this change you need 87.5% instead.

The other way round: Percentage change from 80 to 10. Percentage change is not symmetric: from 10 to 80 is 700%, but from 80 back to 10 is -87.5%, because the starting value is the base. For a comparison that is the same both ways, use the percentage difference between 10 and 80: 155.5556%. See Percentage difference between 10 and 80.
