How to work it out

  1. Difference: 16 − 2 = 14
  2. Divide by the starting value: 14 ÷ 2 = 7
  3. Multiply by 100: 700%
  4. Check: Work forwards from the start: 2 × (1 + 7) = 2 × 8 = 16.

In a spreadsheet: =(16-2)/2*100. Always divide by the starting value, not the new one. A rise from 40 to 50 is +25%, but the fall from 50 back to 40 is −20%.

What the result means

The new value is 8 times the old one: for every 100 at the start there are now 800. The value has more than doubled.

Prices: an item whose price rises from $2 to $16 has gone up by 700%.

Why the change back is different

A 700% rise followed by a 700% fall does not bring you back to 2: it gives -96. The second percentage is taken of 16, not of 2, so to undo this change you need 87.5% instead.

The other way round: Percentage change from 16 to 2. Percentage change is not symmetric: from 2 to 16 is 700%, but from 16 back to 2 is -87.5%, because the starting value is the base. For a comparison that is the same both ways, use the percentage difference between 2 and 16: 155.5556%. See Percentage difference between 2 and 16.
