How to work it out
- Difference: 7 − 4 = 3
- Divide by the starting value: 3 ÷ 4 = 0.75
- Multiply by 100: 75%
- Check: Work forwards from the start: 4 × (1 + 0.75) = 4 × 1.75 = 7.
In a spreadsheet: =(7-4)/4*100. Always divide by the starting value, not the new one. A rise from 40 to 50 is +25%, but the fall from 50 back to 40 is −20%.
What the result means
The new value is 1.75 times the old one: for every 100 at the start there are now 175.
Prices: an item whose price rises from $4 to $7 has gone up by 75%.
Why the change back is different
A 75% rise followed by a 75% fall does not bring you back to 4: it gives 1.75. The second percentage is taken of 7, not of 4, so to undo this change you need 42.8571% instead.

The other way round: Percentage change from 7 to 4. Percentage change is not symmetric: from 4 to 7 is 75%, but from 7 back to 4 is -42.8571%, because the starting value is the base. For a comparison that is the same both ways, use the percentage difference between 4 and 7: 54.5455%. See Percentage difference between 4 and 7.
