How to work it out
- Difference: 100 − 64 = 36
- Divide by the starting value: 36 ÷ 64 = 0.5625
- Multiply by 100: 56.25%
- Check: Work forwards from the start: 64 × (1 + 0.5625) = 64 × 1.5625 = 100.
In a spreadsheet: =(100-64)/64*100. Always divide by the starting value, not the new one. A rise from 40 to 50 is +25%, but the fall from 50 back to 40 is −20%.
What the result means
The new value is 1.5625 times the old one: for every 100 at the start there are now 156.25.
Prices: an item whose price rises from $64 to $100 has gone up by 56.25%.
Why the change back is different
A 56.25% rise followed by a 56.25% fall does not bring you back to 64: it gives 43.75. The second percentage is taken of 100, not of 64, so to undo this change you need 36% instead.
