How to work it out
- Divide the part by the whole: 1 ÷ 1 = 1
- Multiply by 100: 1 × 100 = 100%
- Check: Work backwards: 100% of 1 is 1 × 1 = 1.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 1/1 = p/100, so p = 1 × 100 ÷ 1 = 100%. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =1/1*100. Dividing the wrong way round (whole ÷ part) gives a different answer. The number after “of” is always the whole, so it goes on the bottom.
What the result means
1 is exactly the whole amount of 1.
Test scores: 1 correct answers out of 1 is a score of 100%, which on a common US grading scale is an A.
Turning it around
If you know that 1 is 100% of a number, you can get that number back: 1 ÷ 1 = 1. And 1 as a percentage of 1 is 100%, a different answer, because the whole has changed.
