How to work it out
- Divide the part by the whole: 21 ÷ 100 = 0.21
- Multiply by 100: 0.21 × 100 = 21%
- Check: Work backwards: 21% of 100 is 0.21 × 100 = 21.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 21/100 = p/100, so p = 21 × 100 ÷ 100 = 21%. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =21/100*100. Dividing the wrong way round (whole ÷ part) gives a different answer. The number after “of” is always the whole, so it goes on the bottom.
What the result means
21 is between a tenth and a quarter of 100. The part that is left, 79, is the other 79%.
Test scores: 21 correct answers out of 100 is a score of 21%, which on a common US grading scale is an F.
