How to work it out

  1. Divide the part by the whole: 48 ÷ 24 = 2
  2. Multiply by 100: 2 × 100 = 200%
  3. Check: Work backwards: 200% of 24 is 2 × 24 = 48.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 48/24 = p/100, so p = 48 × 100 ÷ 24 = 200%. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =48/24*100. Dividing the wrong way round (whole ÷ part) gives a different answer. The number after “of” is always the whole, so it goes on the bottom.

What the result means

48 is more than the whole amount (2 times as much) of 24. 48 goes past 24 by 24, which is another 100% on top of the whole.

Targets: selling 48 items against a target of 24 means reaching 200% of the target, beating it by 100%.

Turning it around

If you know that 48 is 200% of a number, you can get that number back: 48 ÷ 2 = 24. And 24 as a percentage of 48 is 50%, a different answer, because the whole has changed.
