How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 1 ÷ 100 = 0.01
  2. Multiply: 0.01 × 4 = 0.04
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.04 ÷ 4 × 100 = 1%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 1/100 = part/4, so part = 1 × 4 ÷ 100 = 0.04. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =1%*4. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.04 is the 1% share of 4. The remaining 99% is 3.96, and the two parts add back up to 4.

Discounts: 1% off an item priced $4 saves $0.04, so you pay $3.96.

Adding and taking away 1%

Increasing 4 by 1% gives 4.04 and decreasing it by 1% gives 3.96. These do not cancel out: raising 4 by 1% and then lowering the result by 1% ends at 3.9996, because the second 1% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 4% of 1. 1% of 4 and 4% of 1 are always equal (both are 1 × 4 ÷ 100 = 0.04), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
