How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 90 ÷ 100 = 0.9
  2. Multiply: 0.9 × 100 = 90
  3. Check: Work backwards: 90 ÷ 100 × 100 = 90%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 90/100 = part/100, so part = 90 × 100 ÷ 100 = 90. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =90%*100. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

90 is the 90% share of 100. The remaining 10% is 10, and the two parts add back up to 100.

Discounts: 90% off an item priced $100 saves $90, so you pay $10.

Adding and taking away 90%

Increasing 100 by 90% gives 190 and decreasing it by 90% gives 10. These do not cancel out: raising 100 by 90% and then lowering the result by 90% ends at 19, because the second 90% is taken of a bigger number.
