How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 40 ÷ 100 = 0.4
  2. Multiply: 0.4 × 250 = 100
  3. Check: Work backwards: 100 ÷ 250 × 100 = 40%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 40/100 = part/250, so part = 40 × 250 ÷ 100 = 100. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =40%*250. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

100 is the 40% share of 250. The remaining 60% is 150, and the two parts add back up to 250.

Discounts: 40% off an item priced $250 saves $100, so you pay $150.

Adding and taking away 40%

Increasing 250 by 40% gives 350 and decreasing it by 40% gives 150. These do not cancel out: raising 250 by 40% and then lowering the result by 40% ends at 210, because the second 40% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 250% of 40. 40% of 250 and 250% of 40 are always equal (both are 40 × 250 ÷ 100 = 100), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
