How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 1 ÷ 100 = 0.01
  2. Multiply: 0.01 × 41 = 0.41
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.41 ÷ 41 × 100 = 1%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 1/100 = part/41, so part = 1 × 41 ÷ 100 = 0.41. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =1%*41. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.41 is the 1% share of 41. The remaining 99% is 40.59, and the two parts add back up to 41.

Discounts: 1% off an item priced $41 saves $0.41, so you pay $40.59.

Adding and taking away 1%

Increasing 41 by 1% gives 41.41 and decreasing it by 1% gives 40.59. These do not cancel out: raising 41 by 1% and then lowering the result by 1% ends at 40.9959, because the second 1% is taken of a bigger number.
