How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 10 ÷ 100 = 0.1
  2. Multiply: 0.1 × 40 = 4
  3. Check: Work backwards: 4 ÷ 40 × 100 = 10%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 10/100 = part/40, so part = 10 × 40 ÷ 100 = 4. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =10%*40. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

4 is the 10% share of 40. The remaining 90% is 36, and the two parts add back up to 40.

Discounts: 10% off an item priced $40 saves $4, so you pay $36.

Adding and taking away 10%

Increasing 40 by 10% gives 44 and decreasing it by 10% gives 36. These do not cancel out: raising 40 by 10% and then lowering the result by 10% ends at 39.6, because the second 10% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 40% of 10. 10% of 40 and 40% of 10 are always equal (both are 10 × 40 ÷ 100 = 4), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
