How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 41 ÷ 100 = 0.41
  2. Multiply: 0.41 × 1 = 0.41
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.41 ÷ 1 × 100 = 41%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 41/100 = part/1, so part = 41 × 1 ÷ 100 = 0.41. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =41%*1. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.41 is the 41% share of 1. The remaining 59% is 0.59, and the two parts add back up to 1.

Discounts: 41% off an item priced $1 saves $0.41, so you pay $0.59.

Adding and taking away 41%

Increasing 1 by 41% gives 1.41 and decreasing it by 41% gives 0.59. These do not cancel out: raising 1 by 41% and then lowering the result by 41% ends at 0.8319, because the second 41% is taken of a bigger number.
