How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 1 ÷ 100 = 0.01
  2. Multiply: 0.01 × 61 = 0.61
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.61 ÷ 61 × 100 = 1%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 1/100 = part/61, so part = 1 × 61 ÷ 100 = 0.61. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =1%*61. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.61 is the 1% share of 61. The remaining 99% is 60.39, and the two parts add back up to 61.

Discounts: 1% off an item priced $61 saves $0.61, so you pay $60.39.

Adding and taking away 1%

Increasing 61 by 1% gives 61.61 and decreasing it by 1% gives 60.39. These do not cancel out: raising 61 by 1% and then lowering the result by 1% ends at 60.9939, because the second 1% is taken of a bigger number.
