How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 40 ÷ 100 = 0.4
- Multiply: 0.4 × 40 = 16
- Check: Work backwards: 16 ÷ 40 × 100 = 40%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 40/100 = part/40, so part = 40 × 40 ÷ 100 = 16. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =40%*40. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
16 is the 40% share of 40. The remaining 60% is 24, and the two parts add back up to 40.
Discounts: 40% off an item priced $40 saves $16, so you pay $24.
Adding and taking away 40%
Increasing 40 by 40% gives 56 and decreasing it by 40% gives 24. These do not cancel out: raising 40 by 40% and then lowering the result by 40% ends at 33.6, because the second 40% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 40% of 40. 40% of 40 and 40% of 40 are always equal (both are 40 × 40 ÷ 100 = 16), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
