How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 1 ÷ 100 = 0.01
  2. Multiply: 0.01 × 88 = 0.88
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.88 ÷ 88 × 100 = 1%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 1/100 = part/88, so part = 1 × 88 ÷ 100 = 0.88. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =1%*88. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.88 is the 1% share of 88. The remaining 99% is 87.12, and the two parts add back up to 88.

Discounts: 1% off an item priced $88 saves $0.88, so you pay $87.12.

Adding and taking away 1%

Increasing 88 by 1% gives 88.88 and decreasing it by 1% gives 87.12. These do not cancel out: raising 88 by 1% and then lowering the result by 1% ends at 87.9912, because the second 1% is taken of a bigger number.
