How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 20 ÷ 100 = 0.2
- Multiply: 0.2 × 30 = 6
- Check: Work backwards: 6 ÷ 30 × 100 = 20%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 20/100 = part/30, so part = 20 × 30 ÷ 100 = 6. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =20%*30. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
6 is the 20% share of 30. The remaining 80% is 24, and the two parts add back up to 30.

Adding and taking away 20%
Increasing 30 by 20% gives 36 and decreasing it by 20% gives 24. These do not cancel out: raising 30 by 20% and then lowering the result by 20% ends at 28.8, because the second 20% is taken of a bigger number.
