How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 10 ÷ 100 = 0.1
  2. Multiply: 0.1 × 80 = 8
  3. Check: Work backwards: 8 ÷ 80 × 100 = 10%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 10/100 = part/80, so part = 10 × 80 ÷ 100 = 8. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =10%*80. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

8 is the 10% share of 80. The remaining 90% is 72, and the two parts add back up to 80.

Discounts: 10% off an item priced $80 saves $8, so you pay $72.

Adding and taking away 10%

Increasing 80 by 10% gives 88 and decreasing it by 10% gives 72. These do not cancel out: raising 80 by 10% and then lowering the result by 10% ends at 79.2, because the second 10% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 80% of 10. 10% of 80 and 80% of 10 are always equal (both are 10 × 80 ÷ 100 = 8), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
