How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 10 ÷ 100 = 0.1
  2. Multiply: 0.1 × 57 = 5.7
  3. Check: Work backwards: 5.7 ÷ 57 × 100 = 10%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 10/100 = part/57, so part = 10 × 57 ÷ 100 = 5.7. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =10%*57. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

5.7 is the 10% share of 57. The remaining 90% is 51.3, and the two parts add back up to 57.

Discounts: 10% off an item priced $57 saves $5.7, so you pay $51.3.

Adding and taking away 10%

Increasing 57 by 10% gives 62.7 and decreasing it by 10% gives 51.3. These do not cancel out: raising 57 by 10% and then lowering the result by 10% ends at 56.43, because the second 10% is taken of a bigger number.
