How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 25 ÷ 100 = 0.25
  2. Multiply: 0.25 × 60 = 15
  3. Check: Work backwards: 15 ÷ 60 × 100 = 25%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 25/100 = part/60, so part = 25 × 60 ÷ 100 = 15. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =25%*60. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

15 is the 25% share of 60. The remaining 75% is 45, and the two parts add back up to 60.

Discounts: 25% off an item priced $60 saves $15, so you pay $45.

Adding and taking away 25%

Increasing 60 by 25% gives 75 and decreasing it by 25% gives 45. These do not cancel out: raising 60 by 25% and then lowering the result by 25% ends at 56.25, because the second 25% is taken of a bigger number.
