How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 10 ÷ 100 = 0.1
- Multiply: 0.1 × 61 = 6.1
- Check: Work backwards: 6.1 ÷ 61 × 100 = 10%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 10/100 = part/61, so part = 10 × 61 ÷ 100 = 6.1. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =10%*61. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
6.1 is the 10% share of 61. The remaining 90% is 54.9, and the two parts add back up to 61.
Discounts: 10% off an item priced $61 saves $6.1, so you pay $54.9.
Adding and taking away 10%
Increasing 61 by 10% gives 67.1 and decreasing it by 10% gives 54.9. These do not cancel out: raising 61 by 10% and then lowering the result by 10% ends at 60.39, because the second 10% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 61% of 10. 10% of 61 and 61% of 10 are always equal (both are 10 × 61 ÷ 100 = 6.1), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
