How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 100 ÷ 100 = 1
  2. Multiply: 1 × 250 = 250
  3. Check: Work backwards: 250 ÷ 250 × 100 = 100%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 100/100 = part/250, so part = 100 × 250 ÷ 100 = 250. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =100%*250. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

100% of a number is the number itself, so the answer is 250.

Mark-ups: pricing an item at 100% of its $250 cost means selling it for $250.

Adding and taking away 100%

Increasing 250 by 100% gives 500. These do not cancel out: raising 250 by 100% and then lowering the result by 100% ends at 0, because the second 100% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 250% of 100. 100% of 250 and 250% of 100 are always equal (both are 100 × 250 ÷ 100 = 250), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
