How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 10 ÷ 100 = 0.1
- Multiply: 0.1 × 89 = 8.9
- Check: Work backwards: 8.9 ÷ 89 × 100 = 10%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 10/100 = part/89, so part = 10 × 89 ÷ 100 = 8.9. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =10%*89. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
8.9 is the 10% share of 89. The remaining 90% is 80.1, and the two parts add back up to 89.
Discounts: 10% off an item priced $89 saves $8.9, so you pay $80.1.
Adding and taking away 10%
Increasing 89 by 10% gives 97.9 and decreasing it by 10% gives 80.1. These do not cancel out: raising 89 by 10% and then lowering the result by 10% ends at 88.11, because the second 10% is taken of a bigger number.
