How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 10 ÷ 100 = 0.1
  2. Multiply: 0.1 × 90 = 9
  3. Check: Work backwards: 9 ÷ 90 × 100 = 10%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 10/100 = part/90, so part = 10 × 90 ÷ 100 = 9. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =10%*90. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

9 is the 10% share of 90. The remaining 90% is 81, and the two parts add back up to 90.

Discounts: 10% off an item priced $90 saves $9, so you pay $81.

Adding and taking away 10%

Increasing 90 by 10% gives 99 and decreasing it by 10% gives 81. These do not cancel out: raising 90 by 10% and then lowering the result by 10% ends at 89.1, because the second 10% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 90% of 10. 10% of 90 and 90% of 10 are always equal (both are 10 × 90 ÷ 100 = 9), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
