How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 12 ÷ 100 = 0.12
  2. Multiply: 0.12 × 17 = 2.04
  3. Check: Work backwards: 2.04 ÷ 17 × 100 = 12%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 12/100 = part/17, so part = 12 × 17 ÷ 100 = 2.04. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =12%*17. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

2.04 is the 12% share of 17. The remaining 88% is 14.96, and the two parts add back up to 17.

Discounts: 12% off an item priced $17 saves $2.04, so you pay $14.96.

Adding and taking away 12%

Increasing 17 by 12% gives 19.04 and decreasing it by 12% gives 14.96. These do not cancel out: raising 17 by 12% and then lowering the result by 12% ends at 16.7552, because the second 12% is taken of a bigger number.
