How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 17 ÷ 100 = 0.17
  2. Multiply: 0.17 × 12 = 2.04
  3. Check: Work backwards: 2.04 ÷ 12 × 100 = 17%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 17/100 = part/12, so part = 17 × 12 ÷ 100 = 2.04. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =17%*12. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

2.04 is the 17% share of 12. The remaining 83% is 9.96, and the two parts add back up to 12.

Discounts: 17% off an item priced $12 saves $2.04, so you pay $9.96.

Adding and taking away 17%

Increasing 12 by 17% gives 14.04 and decreasing it by 17% gives 9.96. These do not cancel out: raising 12 by 17% and then lowering the result by 17% ends at 11.6532, because the second 17% is taken of a bigger number.
