How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 40 ÷ 100 = 0.4
  2. Multiply: 0.4 × 25 = 10
  3. Check: Work backwards: 10 ÷ 25 × 100 = 40%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 40/100 = part/25, so part = 40 × 25 ÷ 100 = 10. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =40%*25. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

10 is the 40% share of 25. The remaining 60% is 15, and the two parts add back up to 25.

Discounts: 40% off an item priced $25 saves $10, so you pay $15.

Adding and taking away 40%

Increasing 25 by 40% gives 35 and decreasing it by 40% gives 15. These do not cancel out: raising 25 by 40% and then lowering the result by 40% ends at 21, because the second 40% is taken of a bigger number.
