How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 12 ÷ 100 = 0.12
  2. Multiply: 0.12 × 27 = 3.24
  3. Check: Work backwards: 3.24 ÷ 27 × 100 = 12%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 12/100 = part/27, so part = 12 × 27 ÷ 100 = 3.24. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =12%*27. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

3.24 is the 12% share of 27. The remaining 88% is 23.76, and the two parts add back up to 27.

Discounts: 12% off an item priced $27 saves $3.24, so you pay $23.76.

Adding and taking away 12%

Increasing 27 by 12% gives 30.24 and decreasing it by 12% gives 23.76. These do not cancel out: raising 27 by 12% and then lowering the result by 12% ends at 26.6112, because the second 12% is taken of a bigger number.
