How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 10 ÷ 100 = 0.1
  2. Multiply: 0.1 × 45 = 4.5
  3. Check: Work backwards: 4.5 ÷ 45 × 100 = 10%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 10/100 = part/45, so part = 10 × 45 ÷ 100 = 4.5. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =10%*45. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

4.5 is the 10% share of 45. The remaining 90% is 40.5, and the two parts add back up to 45.

Discounts: 10% off an item priced $45 saves $4.5, so you pay $40.5.

Adding and taking away 10%

Increasing 45 by 10% gives 49.5 and decreasing it by 10% gives 40.5. These do not cancel out: raising 45 by 10% and then lowering the result by 10% ends at 44.55, because the second 10% is taken of a bigger number.
