How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 70 ÷ 100 = 0.7
- Multiply: 0.7 × 20 = 14
- Check: Work backwards: 14 ÷ 20 × 100 = 70%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 70/100 = part/20, so part = 70 × 20 ÷ 100 = 14. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =70%*20. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
14 is the 70% share of 20. The remaining 30% is 6, and the two parts add back up to 20.
Discounts: 70% off an item priced $20 saves $14, so you pay $6.
Adding and taking away 70%
Increasing 20 by 70% gives 34 and decreasing it by 70% gives 6. These do not cancel out: raising 20 by 70% and then lowering the result by 70% ends at 10.2, because the second 70% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 20% of 70. 70% of 20 and 20% of 70 are always equal (both are 70 × 20 ÷ 100 = 14), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
