How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 12 ÷ 100 = 0.12
  2. Multiply: 0.12 × 67 = 8.04
  3. Check: Work backwards: 8.04 ÷ 67 × 100 = 12%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 12/100 = part/67, so part = 12 × 67 ÷ 100 = 8.04. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =12%*67. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

8.04 is the 12% share of 67. The remaining 88% is 58.96, and the two parts add back up to 67.

Discounts: 12% off an item priced $67 saves $8.04, so you pay $58.96.

Adding and taking away 12%

Increasing 67 by 12% gives 75.04 and decreasing it by 12% gives 58.96. These do not cancel out: raising 67 by 12% and then lowering the result by 12% ends at 66.0352, because the second 12% is taken of a bigger number.
