How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 90 ÷ 100 = 0.9
  2. Multiply: 0.9 × 55 = 49.5
  3. Check: Work backwards: 49.5 ÷ 55 × 100 = 90%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 90/100 = part/55, so part = 90 × 55 ÷ 100 = 49.5. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =90%*55. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

49.5 is the 90% share of 55. The remaining 10% is 5.5, and the two parts add back up to 55.

Discounts: 90% off an item priced $55 saves $49.5, so you pay $5.5.

Adding and taking away 90%

Increasing 55 by 90% gives 104.5 and decreasing it by 90% gives 5.5. These do not cancel out: raising 55 by 90% and then lowering the result by 90% ends at 10.45, because the second 90% is taken of a bigger number.
