How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15
  2. Multiply: 0.15 × 35 = 5.25
  3. Check: Work backwards: 5.25 ÷ 35 × 100 = 15%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 15/100 = part/35, so part = 15 × 35 ÷ 100 = 5.25. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =15%*35. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

5.25 is the 15% share of 35. The remaining 85% is 29.75, and the two parts add back up to 35.

Discounts: 15% off an item priced $35 saves $5.25, so you pay $29.75.

Adding and taking away 15%

Increasing 35 by 15% gives 40.25 and decreasing it by 15% gives 29.75. These do not cancel out: raising 35 by 15% and then lowering the result by 15% ends at 34.2125, because the second 15% is taken of a bigger number.
