How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 12 ÷ 100 = 0.12
  2. Multiply: 0.12 × 91 = 10.92
  3. Check: Work backwards: 10.92 ÷ 91 × 100 = 12%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 12/100 = part/91, so part = 12 × 91 ÷ 100 = 10.92. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =12%*91. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

10.92 is the 12% share of 91. The remaining 88% is 80.08, and the two parts add back up to 91.

Discounts: 12% off an item priced $91 saves $10.92, so you pay $80.08.

Adding and taking away 12%

Increasing 91 by 12% gives 101.92 and decreasing it by 12% gives 80.08. These do not cancel out: raising 91 by 12% and then lowering the result by 12% ends at 89.6896, because the second 12% is taken of a bigger number.
