How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 40 ÷ 100 = 0.4
  2. Multiply: 0.4 × 15 = 6
  3. Check: Work backwards: 6 ÷ 15 × 100 = 40%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 40/100 = part/15, so part = 40 × 15 ÷ 100 = 6. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =40%*15. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

6 is the 40% share of 15. The remaining 60% is 9, and the two parts add back up to 15.

Discounts: 40% off an item priced $15 saves $6, so you pay $9.

Adding and taking away 40%

Increasing 15 by 40% gives 21 and decreasing it by 40% gives 9. These do not cancel out: raising 15 by 40% and then lowering the result by 40% ends at 12.6, because the second 40% is taken of a bigger number.
