How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 60 ÷ 100 = 0.6
  2. Multiply: 0.6 × 50 = 30
  3. Check: Work backwards: 30 ÷ 50 × 100 = 60%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 60/100 = part/50, so part = 60 × 50 ÷ 100 = 30. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =60%*50. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

30 is the 60% share of 50. The remaining 40% is 20, and the two parts add back up to 50.

Discounts: 60% off an item priced $50 saves $30, so you pay $20.

Adding and taking away 60%

Increasing 50 by 60% gives 80 and decreasing it by 60% gives 20. These do not cancel out: raising 50 by 60% and then lowering the result by 60% ends at 32, because the second 60% is taken of a bigger number.
