How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15
  2. Multiply: 0.15 × 150 = 22.5
  3. Check: Work backwards: 22.5 ÷ 150 × 100 = 15%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 15/100 = part/150, so part = 15 × 150 ÷ 100 = 22.5. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =15%*150. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

22.5 is the 15% share of 150. The remaining 85% is 127.5, and the two parts add back up to 150.

Discounts: 15% off an item priced $150 saves $22.5, so you pay $127.5.

Adding and taking away 15%

Increasing 150 by 15% gives 172.5 and decreasing it by 15% gives 127.5. These do not cancel out: raising 150 by 15% and then lowering the result by 15% ends at 146.625, because the second 15% is taken of a bigger number.
