How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15
  2. Multiply: 0.15 × 40 = 6
  3. Check: Work backwards: 6 ÷ 40 × 100 = 15%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 15/100 = part/40, so part = 15 × 40 ÷ 100 = 6. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =15%*40. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

6 is the 15% share of 40. The remaining 85% is 34, and the two parts add back up to 40.

Discounts: 15% off an item priced $40 saves $6, so you pay $34.

Adding and taking away 15%

Increasing 40 by 15% gives 46 and decreasing it by 15% gives 34. These do not cancel out: raising 40 by 15% and then lowering the result by 15% ends at 39.1, because the second 15% is taken of a bigger number.
