How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 5 ÷ 100 = 0.05
- Multiply: 0.05 × 150 = 7.5
- Check: Work backwards: 7.5 ÷ 150 × 100 = 5%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 5/100 = part/150, so part = 5 × 150 ÷ 100 = 7.5. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =5%*150. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
7.5 is the 5% share of 150. The remaining 95% is 142.5, and the two parts add back up to 150.
Discounts: 5% off an item priced $150 saves $7.5, so you pay $142.5.
Adding and taking away 5%
Increasing 150 by 5% gives 157.5 and decreasing it by 5% gives 142.5. These do not cancel out: raising 150 by 5% and then lowering the result by 5% ends at 149.625, because the second 5% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 150% of 5. 5% of 150 and 150% of 5 are always equal (both are 5 × 150 ÷ 100 = 7.5), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
