How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15
  2. Multiply: 0.15 × 36 = 5.4
  3. Check: Work backwards: 5.4 ÷ 36 × 100 = 15%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 15/100 = part/36, so part = 15 × 36 ÷ 100 = 5.4. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =15%*36. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

5.4 is the 15% share of 36. The remaining 85% is 30.6, and the two parts add back up to 36.

Discounts: 15% off an item priced $36 saves $5.4, so you pay $30.6.

Adding and taking away 15%

Increasing 36 by 15% gives 41.4 and decreasing it by 15% gives 30.6. These do not cancel out: raising 36 by 15% and then lowering the result by 15% ends at 35.19, because the second 15% is taken of a bigger number.
