How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15
- Multiply: 0.15 × 600 = 90
- Check: Work backwards: 90 ÷ 600 × 100 = 15%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 15/100 = part/600, so part = 15 × 600 ÷ 100 = 90. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =15%*600. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
90 is the 15% share of 600. The remaining 85% is 510, and the two parts add back up to 600.
Discounts: 15% off an item priced $600 saves $90, so you pay $510.
Adding and taking away 15%
Increasing 600 by 15% gives 690 and decreasing it by 15% gives 510. These do not cancel out: raising 600 by 15% and then lowering the result by 15% ends at 586.5, because the second 15% is taken of a bigger number.
