How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 75 ÷ 100 = 0.75
- Multiply: 0.75 × 300 = 225
- Check: Work backwards: 225 ÷ 300 × 100 = 75%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 75/100 = part/300, so part = 75 × 300 ÷ 100 = 225. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =75%*300. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
225 is the 75% share of 300. The remaining 25% is 75, and the two parts add back up to 300.
Discounts: 75% off an item priced $300 saves $225, so you pay $75.
Adding and taking away 75%
Increasing 300 by 75% gives 525 and decreasing it by 75% gives 75. These do not cancel out: raising 300 by 75% and then lowering the result by 75% ends at 131.25, because the second 75% is taken of a bigger number.
