How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15
  2. Multiply: 0.15 × 7 = 1.05
  3. Check: Work backwards: 1.05 ÷ 7 × 100 = 15%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 15/100 = part/7, so part = 15 × 7 ÷ 100 = 1.05. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =15%*7. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

1.05 is the 15% share of 7. The remaining 85% is 5.95, and the two parts add back up to 7.

Discounts: 15% off an item priced $7 saves $1.05, so you pay $5.95.

Adding and taking away 15%

Increasing 7 by 15% gives 8.05 and decreasing it by 15% gives 5.95. These do not cancel out: raising 7 by 15% and then lowering the result by 15% ends at 6.8425, because the second 15% is taken of a bigger number.
