How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 25 ÷ 100 = 0.25
- Multiply: 0.25 × 50 = 12.5
- Check: Work backwards: 12.5 ÷ 50 × 100 = 25%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 25/100 = part/50, so part = 25 × 50 ÷ 100 = 12.5. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =25%*50. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
12.5 is the 25% share of 50. The remaining 75% is 37.5, and the two parts add back up to 50.
Discounts: 25% off an item priced $50 saves $12.5, so you pay $37.5.
Adding and taking away 25%
Increasing 50 by 25% gives 62.5 and decreasing it by 25% gives 37.5. These do not cancel out: raising 50 by 25% and then lowering the result by 25% ends at 46.875, because the second 25% is taken of a bigger number.
