How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 80 ÷ 100 = 0.8
  2. Multiply: 0.8 × 45 = 36
  3. Check: Work backwards: 36 ÷ 45 × 100 = 80%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 80/100 = part/45, so part = 80 × 45 ÷ 100 = 36. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =80%*45. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

36 is the 80% share of 45. The remaining 20% is 9, and the two parts add back up to 45.

Discounts: 80% off an item priced $45 saves $36, so you pay $9.

Adding and taking away 80%

Increasing 45 by 80% gives 81 and decreasing it by 80% gives 9. These do not cancel out: raising 45 by 80% and then lowering the result by 80% ends at 16.2, because the second 80% is taken of a bigger number.
